Ludolf Bakhuizen (Backhuysen or Backhuisen), was a German-born Dutch Golden Age painter who was one of the leading Dutch painter of maritime subjects.

He worked as a merchant's clerk and a calligrapher until he discovered a talent for painting that he relinquished the business and devoted himself to art from the late 1650s. He studied under Allart van Everdingen and Hendrik Dubbels, two eminent masters of the time, and soon became celebrated for his sea-pieces, which often had rough seas.

Bakhuizen was visited by Cosimo III de' Medici, Peter the Great and various German princes.

Texel is an island in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It is the largest and most populated island of the West Frisian Islands in the Wadden Sea. The island is also known as "Razende Bol".
